Is It Too Hot for Coffee?
If you drink coffee, can you imagine a morning without it? I cannot. No, I will not. My world doesn’t make sense without that enticing aroma waking me up in the morning. I like to flavor it with cinnamon, honey, and vanilla almond milk.
Is our coffee in trouble?
I’m just going to get to the point. Climate change is directly and negatively affecting our world’s coffee growing regions and their economic security.
This is no joke.
“Changing climatic conditions and rising global
temperatures pose one of the most significant
threats to world coffee production.”
International Coffee Organization
Last year, The Climate Institute reported that it ” is a key global crop and the second most valuable commodity exported by developing countries”. In 2015, the United States imported about 19 billion dollars worth and consumers “spent $74.2 billion on coffee.”
Let’s discuss some of the issues.
Scientific evidence has shown that rising temperatures, long droughts with sporadic extreme rainfall, and pest and plant diseases are ” tightly linked to climate and weather, particularly temperature and moisture.” “Even half a degree at the wrong time can make a big difference in coffee yield, flavour, and aroma.” As it stands, most producers in developing countries are not prepared for even a 2 degree increase in temperatures. Don’t you think we should start making positive changes immediately?
How can coffee drinkers of the world make a difference?
It’s so simple! In addition to living a more eco-friendly lifestyle, choose brands that are Fair Trade Certified and Organic. You will be supporting smaller farms that can provide a living wage in safer working conditions. Moreover, many of these farms support “environmental sustainability through organic practices that reduce and/or eliminate the use of harmful toxic agrochemicals, pesticides and other chemical additives. ” Without chemicals, people can work in a safer environment, biodiversity can flourish, and your coffee will taste better and be healthier for you.
FYI – ” Biodiversity is proving to be one of humanity’s best defenses against extreme weather and rising temperatures”
